Description
Pekin ducks have pure white feathers, sometimes with a creamy or yellowish tint. They have large, solid bodies with broad chests and thick necks. Their beaks are short, straight, and yellowish-orange, and they have webbed feed of a similar color. Male Pekin ducks tend to be built heavier, weighing 8-11 pounds, while females are smaller, weighing around 7-9 pounds. Pekin ducks have dark, expressive eyes, and are characterized by their classic “duck” appearance.
Pekin ducks are the most popular duck on the market, bred mainly for their meat. Their meat is tender, mild, and they are prized for their large breast meat by chefs and home cooks alike. The females are good egg-layers, producing around 125-225 eggs annually, more than Muscovy ducks. Their eggs are larger than chicken eggs, and white or slightly tinted. The eggs usually have a rich, creamy flavor, with thicker whites and darker yolks, excellent for baking and savory dishes.
Like Muscovy Ducks, Pekin ducks tend to be quite tame and docile, a good option for familes and beginner duck farmers. They can have a tendency to be noisy, especially when it’s feeding time or when they want attention. Quaking is common, though maybe less so then some other breeds. These ducks love to explore and are quite resilient to various climates and environments.
