  1. 🐣 The Best Way to Receive Your Newly Hatched Chicks

Hale Malu Farms Guide for Healthy, Happy Starts

    6

Bringing home newly hatched chicks is one of the most exciting parts of raising poultry—but it’s also one of the most important moments for their survival and long-term health.

Whether you’re receiving chicks from a hatchery or picking them up locally, how you handle them in the first 24 hours makes all the difference.

Here’s how to do it the right way.

📦 1. Be Ready BEFORE Your Chicks Arrive

Your brooder should already be set up and running at least 24 hours in advance.

    What you need ready:
Heat source (95°F for week one)
    Clean bedding (pine shavings recommended)
Fresh water (with electrolytes if possible)
    Chick starter feed

👉 Never wait until chicks arrive to set this up

    🔥 2. Temperature is Everything

Chicks cannot regulate their body temperature.

    Ideal starting temp:
    Week 1: 95°F
    Lower 5°F each week after

    Watch your chicks:

    Huddling = too cold
Spreading far away = too hot
    Even movement = perfect
📬 3. Open the Box Immediately

    When your chicks arrive:

    Open the box right away
    Check for active, alert chicks
    Remove them gently

    👉 They’ve been through stress—time matters

    💧 4. FIRST PRIORITY: WATER

    Before feeding, give water.

    Important step:

Gently dip each chick’s beak into water so they learn to drink.

    You can add:

    Electrolytes
    Sugar water (temporary boost)
    🌾 5. Introduce Feed

    Once they’ve had water:

    Provide chick starter feed
Sprinkle some on paper towel for easy access

👉 This helps them start eating quickly

🛑 6. Watch for Weak Chicks

    Not every chick arrives strong.

    Look for:

    Lethargy
    Weak standing
    Not drinking

    👉 Separate and give:

    Extra warmth
    Electrolytes
🧼 7. Keep It Clean & Low Stress

    First few days:

    Avoid handling too much
    Keep brooder dry
    Maintain airflow without drafts
    🐔 8. Daily Check Routine

    Every day:

    Check water levels
    Refill feed
    Monitor temperature
    Observe behavior

👉 Your eyes are your best tool
